FAQ

How does it remove hair?

The Laser delivers energy through a small hand piece in the form of a beam of light. The laser targets hair in the growing phase by honing in on the melanin in the hair follicle, following it down the hair shaft, where it destroys it. As long as the hair has pigment in it, the laser will destroy the hair follicle on impact – once destroyed this follicle will never grow back. Hair grows in cycles therefore each growth cycle will need to be treated with the laser in order to obtain permanent hair reduction. We recommends between 8 – 12 treatments.

What can I expect after the procedure?

The treated area may be slightly pink for a few minutes to several hours after the treatment.

What is the downtime?

There is no downtime. Patient can return to normal activities immediately after the treatment.

Are laser hair removal treatments painful?

We uses Candela’s patented Dynamic Cooling Device™ (DCD™), which prepares the skin for treatment by spraying the upper layer with a cooling burst of cryogen just before the laser hits the area. This cooling of the skins surface and constant measurement of the skin’s resistance ensures that the treatments are as comfortable as they are effective.

What precautions should I take before the treatment?

We recommend that sun exposure be avoided at least two weeks before your hair removal treatment. Tanned skin will blister so it is better to wait for tans to fade before having a treatment. No bleaching, plucking or waxing 4-6 weeks before and after a treatment. Rather shave for a few weeks before your treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

We recommends 8-12 treatments but It is important to remember that each individual’s age, ethnicity, weight, metabolism, body area, medication and hormones have a direct result on hair growth and can affect their laser hair removal process.

Is Laser Hair Removal a safe treatment?

Lasers have been safely used for many years for a variety of medical and cosmetic procedures. Cosmoderm prides itself in offering highly skilled therapist with the best training.

Why do I need multiple treatments?

Hair grows in cycles therefore each growth cycle will need to be treated with the laser in order to obtain permanent hair reduction. When the hair is actively growing, each individual hair goes through three main cycles, namely; Anagen, Catagen and Telogen. Anagen is considered the growing stage, this is when the root of the hair is the largest, has an abundance of melanin, and is attached to the root. It is only during this stage that the hair can be targeted by lasers. Anagen can last several weeks normally, and at any time, about 15-20% of a person’s hair is in this stage.

Treatment of Beard bumps or Pseudo folliculitis Barbae (PFB)

In this instance, ‘prevention is better than cure’. The ND:YAG Laser successfully removes hair on dark skin types leaving the surface of the skin un-damaged. As it destroys the hair follicle it reduces the risks of PFB.

Laser removal of pigmentation lesions

Laser used: Alexandrite 755nm

The Alexandrite Laser wavelength reduces or eliminates the appearance of unwanted pigment in the skin by using light to target the pigmented area and break it up. On impact it treats the ageing effects of sun damage fading the pigmentation (sun spots, age spots and freckles) in the treated areas.  While some areas respond with just one treatment, other areas may require multiple treatments over several visits. When multiple treatments are required, significant improvement should be noted with each visit.

Laser Vein Removal

Laser Used: NdYag 1064NM

The laser beam heats up the blood inside the vein coagulating the vessel and its lining.  This process restricts the blood flow in the vessel, which in turn removes the vein.  This is a very effective treatment for removing leg veins however it does require several treatments and takes a few months before the results can be seen.

Laser Facial Rejuvenation

The non-ablative cosmetic lasers like the Alexandrite Laser & Nd:YAG Lasers offer a fantastic rejuvenating treatment, which softens fine facial lines and removes the ageing effects of sun damage and pigmentation.  The Laser Facial Rejuvenation treatment deposits heat into the deeper layers of the skin leaving the surface area untouched.  In addition to minimising skin imperfections, the large amount of heat deposited into the skin stimulates collagen production and promotes tissue tightening through coagulation.

What is Fraxel® DUAL?

Fraxel DUAL laser treatment is the premier Fraxel system for non-ablative skin resurfacing and rejuvenation, delivering remarkable results with minimal downtime. The laser’s 1550 nm and 1927 nm wavelengths, combined with proprietary advancements in optical technology, enables patients to uncover the skin of their youth with minimal disruption to their daily routine.

How does it work?

Fraxel® DUAL uses patented fractional technology to target damaged skin with microscopic laser columns that penetrate deep into the skin. The laser treats only a fraction of tissue at a time, leaving the surrounding tissue untouched, which promotes rapid healing. This stimulates your body’s own natural healing process, replacing the old and damaged cells with fresh, glowing, healthy skin.

What FDA clearances has the Fraxel DUAL treatment received?

  • Photo damage
  • Mild to moderate periorbital wrinkles
  • Acne scars
  • Surgical scars
  • Melasma
  • Actinic Keratosis

What results can be expected with the Fraxel® DUAL treatment?

  • Improved skin tone and texture and other more superficial signs of ageing
  • Reduced fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes
  • Reduce appearance of unwanted brown spots
  • Improved appearance of acne scars and surgical scars
  • Improved appearance of stretch marks
  • Effective treatment of pre-cancerous lesions (actinic keratosis)
  • Excellent treatment for face, neck, chest, arms, legs and back.
  • Results are immediate and progressive and improve over the course of treatment

How many Fraxel DUAL treatments are in the typical treatment regimen?

Clinical studies suggest that on average, an effective treatment regimen is 3 to 5 sessions spaced about 4 weeks apart. Depending on the patient’s condition and schedule, treatments may be spaced further apart. Results are both immediate and progressive, with optimal improvement usually visible in 1 to 2 months. This time frame and treatment structure allow for complete healing and the production of new collagen and elastin to replace damaged tissue.
